Beijing and Shanghai See Two-Digit Drop in Retail Sales in November

Being and Shanghai, two largest regional economies in China, witnessed a sharp decline in their retail sales in November, according to municipal statistics authorities.

AsianFin -- China's capital Beijing and commerial hub Shanghai saw their retails sales of consumer goods tumble in November from the same periof of  2023, according to the municpal statistics bureaus. 

In November, retail sales of consumer goods, a key barometer of economic activities, plunged 14.1% to 127.6 billion yuan from the same period of 2023 while Shanghai's retail sales of consumer goods dropped by 13.5% to 144.3 billion yuan.

Of all items, retail sales of durable goods in Shanghai saw the steepest decline of 20.3% year over year to 75.4 billion yuan in November. In Beijing, energy consumption, such as oil ang gas, tumbled 23.7% to 3.96 billion yuan.

Shanghai's retail sales saw a year-on-year 13.5% fall in November.

In the first 11 months, retail sales of consumer goods in Shanghai dipped 3.1% year over year to 1,637 billion yuan while the figure in Beijing fell 2.8% to 1,285 billion yuan. That being said, the performance in the first 11 months was better in the two cities from the same period of 2023, compared with the figures in the first 10 months.
