AsianFin — U.S. President Donald Trump said he will begin notifying trade partners of new tariff rates as early as Friday, signaling a shift toward a more unilateral approach in trade policy.
Speaking on July 3, Trump said his administration plans to send approximately 10 letters per day to various countries, outlining how much they are expected to pay in tariffs to continue doing business with the United States. He noted that sending letters is “much easier” than continuing negotiations, suggesting he favors setting tariff terms independently.
The announcement reinforces Trump’s earlier warnings that, absent trade agreements by the July 9 deadline, the U.S. will unilaterally impose new tariff rates. Earlier this week, Trump ruled out extending the negotiation period.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent confirmed on Wednesday that the decision to extend talks, if at all, would rest solely with the president. The White House has not disclosed which countries will receive the first wave of notifications.
