U.S. Department of Justice Considers Ending Criminal Cases Against Trump

Nov 07, 2024, 1:02 a.m. ET

Asianfin -- The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is reportedly assessing how to conclude two federal criminal cases against former President Donald Trump before his expected inauguration, in line with the policy that sitting presidents cannot be prosecuted.

Sources familiar with the matter indicate that DOJ officials believe there is no longer sufficient grounds to continue pursuing the criminal charges against Trump, and that filing further lawsuits just weeks before he takes office would be futile.

Trump has faced multiple legal challenges, including federal charges related to his alleged attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election and mishandling classified documents after leaving office. He also faces state-level legal issues, including the "hush money" case related to payments made during the 2016 presidential campaign.

As the DOJ evaluates its next steps, the future of these legal proceedings remains uncertain, with the department aiming to balance the legal process with the policies surrounding the transition of power.
