Iran Lifts Ban on Imports of New iPhone Models in Place Since Last Year

Oct 30, 2024, 4:31 a.m. ET

Asianfin -- Iranians will soon have access to iPhone models 14, 15, and 16 after authorities lifted a ban on importing new Apple smartphones, according to an announcement made Wednesday.

The ban, which had been in effect since 2023, restricted the entry of newer iPhone models into Iran. However, the country’s telecommunications minister, Satar Hashemi, stated on X (formerly Twitter) that the issue has now been “resolved” and that registration of these devices will be allowed, with the support of President Masoud Pezeshkian. Hashemi noted that further details regarding the new import measures would be announced soon.

While the restriction was in place, only iPhone 13 and older models could be legally imported, as newer iPhones would stop working on Iran's state-controlled networks after a month—the limit set for tourists’ mobile access. Despite the restrictions, iPhones have continued to be a symbol of status and are in high demand among young Iranians.
