Evergrande Chairman Hui Ka Yan Reportedly Held in Special Detention Center in Shenzhen

Sep 12, 2024, 8:07 a.m. ET

Asianfin--Hui Ka Yan, Chairman of China Evergrande Group, which is at the heart of China's property sector crisis, has been transferred to a special detention center in Shenzhen, Reuters reported, citing two sources familiar with the situation.

The 65-year-old Hui has remained out of the public eye since his detention by Chinese authorities a year ago, with no updates on his location until now.

In March, following revelations from China's securities regulator about inflated earnings and securities fraud at Evergrande's flagship unit, Hui was fined $6.6 million and permanently banned from the securities market. Evergrande was subsequently ordered into liquidation in January.
