EU Launches Formal Probe into X Over AI Chatbot Risks

Jan 26, 2026, 8:32 a.m. ET

The European Commission announced on Monday that it has initiated a formal investigation into X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, under the Digital Services Act (DSA). The investigation will focus on assessing the potential risks posed by the platform’s built-in AI chatbot Grok.

According to the Commission, the inquiry will evaluate whether Grok, an AI tool integrated into X’s ecosystem, complies with the stringent requirements of the Digital Services Act, which aims to regulate content moderation, data privacy, and the safety of online platforms across the EU.

The probe comes amid increasing concerns about the deployment of artificial intelligence tools in social media environments, particularly regarding their potential to influence user behavior, spread misinformation, and raise privacy risks.

The investigation marks another step in the EU’s broader effort to enforce stricter oversight of tech giants and emerging technologies under the DSA, which seeks to hold platforms accountable for the content they host and their use of AI-driven services.

The outcome of the investigation could have significant implications for how AI tools are used in social media globally, particularly for platforms operating within the EU’s jurisdiction.
