EU Council Approves Ban on Russian Natural Gas Imports Starting 2027

Jan 26, 2026, 6:30 a.m. ET

The Council of the European Union has approved a ban on Russian natural gas imports, marking a major step in the bloc’s efforts to further reduce its reliance on Russian energy, the EU said on Monday local time.

Under the decision, the European Union will impose a full ban on imports of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) starting January 1, 2027, followed by a complete ban on Russian pipeline gas imports from September 30, 2027.

EU officials said existing contracts will be subject to a transition period. Before authorizing any natural gas imports into the bloc, EU member states will be required to verify the country of origin of the gas.

Failure to comply with the new rules could result in significant penalties, including fines of at least €2.5 million for individuals and no less than €40 million for companies, according to the council.

In addition, EU member states must submit plans by March 1, 2026, outlining measures to diversify natural gas supplies and identify alternative sources to replace Russian gas.

The move underscores the EU’s broader strategy to strengthen energy security and accelerate supply diversification amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
