Total retail sales of consumer goods in China reached 50.1 trillion yuan (about US$7.1 billion) in 2025, marking a year-on-year increase of 3.7% and crossing the 50 trillion-yuan threshold for the first time, officials said at a press conference held by the State Council Information Office.
Officials attributed the growth to a dual-engine approach combining supportive policies with nationwide promotional activities, aimed at building the “Shop in China” brand and further unlocking consumer demand.
Consumption played an increasingly important role in driving economic growth in China, with its contribution rising to 52% in 2025, up 5 percentage points from the previous year, according to data released at the briefing.
