Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. has launched a joint electricity generation venture with China National Nuclear Power Co., aiming to help supply the massive energy demands of its AI data centers.
The $35.9 million (250 million yuan) joint venture, established this week with China National Nuclear Power and several other partners, was registered on the corporate database Tianyancha. The documents indicate collaboration on energy generation, though the precise scope of operations and partnership details were not disclosed. Alibaba representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Globally, tech giants including Meta Platforms Inc. and Microsoft Corp. have partnered with nuclear power companies to secure clean, 24/7 electricity for their energy-intensive data centers. In China, government policies have predominantly emphasized leveraging the country’s leading solar and wind capacity to meet surging computing demands.
