OpenAI plans to begin testing targeted ads within its ChatGPT app in the coming weeks for select users in the United States, marking a significant shift in the company’s strategy to monetize its popular chatbot.
The ads will appear to free-tier ChatGPT users as well as subscribers to OpenAI’s newly launched, low-cost “ChatGPT Go” plan—introduced first in India and now expanding to the U.S.—priced at $8 per month. Higher-tier ChatGPT Plus subscribers will continue to enjoy an ad-free experience.
OpenAI’s move comes amid broader efforts to diversify revenue streams ahead of a potential initial public offering, while helping offset the substantial costs of developing and operating AI systems.
