Malaysia’s Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) announced on Monday that it has temporarily restricted internet users in the country from accessing “Grok,” the AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s company.
The regulator said the measure was taken in response to reports that Grok had been misused to generate obscene, offensive, and non-consensual synthetic imagery, including content depicting women and minors.
The temporary restriction aims to prevent further dissemination of harmful or illegal material while authorities assess the situation and determine the appropriate regulatory response.
The MCMC’s move is part of a broader global debate over AI content moderation, particularly for generative AI systems capable of producing images and text that could be exploited for harmful purposes.
