Denmark’s prime minister has urged Donald Trump to stop making threats about taking control of Greenland, after the former U.S. president’s renewed comments raised concerns in Copenhagen about Washington’s military intentions in the Arctic.
Mette Frederiksen was responding to Trump’s assertion on Sunday that the United States “needs” Greenland for defence purposes. Greenland is a semi-autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.
“I need to say this very directly to the United States,” Frederiksen said in a statement. “The U.S. has no right to annex any of the three countries of the Kingdom of Denmark.”
She stressed that Denmark and Greenland are members of the NATO alliance and therefore fall under its collective defence guarantee. Frederiksen also pointed to a longstanding defence agreement that already gives the United States extensive military access to Greenland, arguing that Washington’s security interests are already being met through existing arrangements.
