France Opens Probe Into Elon Musk’s XAI Chatbot Over Alleged Illegal Sexual Content

Jan 04, 2026, 3:52 a.m. ET

French prosecutors have launched a formal investigation into the artificial intelligence chatbot Grok, developed by Elon Musk’s AI firm xAI, over allegations it generated illegal sexual content, including material involving minors, prosecutors confirmed on Friday.

Grok is integrated into Musk‑owned social media platform X and can be directly accessed by users of the site. French authorities said some users had exploited the chatbot to edit images and videos in a way that produced lifelike fake sexual content, which was then shared on the platform. Reports indicate that hundreds of women and minors may have been affected.

Several French government ministers and members of the National Assembly filed complaints with judicial authorities about the incidents, prompting the Paris prosecutor’s office to open the investigation. Prosecutors did not immediately detail specific charges.

The move extends broader scrutiny of X by French authorities, who have previously been examining the platform for other issues since mid‑2025. The investigation into Grok underscores mounting regulatory pressure on generative AI tools and online platforms over harmful content.
