Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL) said that starting in 2026 it will roll out large-scale applications of sodium-ion batteries across multiple sectors, including battery swapping, passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and energy storage.
The company said the move is expected to create a new industry pattern in which sodium-ion and lithium-ion batteries develop in parallel, forming what it described as a “dual-star” trend in next-generation battery technologies.
CATL added that sodium-ion batteries, with advantages in cost, safety and low-temperature performance, will complement lithium-ion batteries and help support the expansion of electric mobility and renewable energy systems.
