China is still limiting supplies of rare earth elements critical for producing permanent magnets and other products in the United States, despite a deal reached in October between President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart to ease restrictions, according to market sources.
More than a dozen consumers, producers, government officials, and trade experts said that while China has increased shipments of finished goods—mainly permanent magnets—the U.S. industry continues to face shortages of the raw materials needed to manufacture these products domestically, a top priority for the administration. Sources spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussions were not public.
