U.S. President Donald Trump said Sunday that he has selected his next Federal Reserve chair and will reveal the choice soon.
“I know who I’m going to pick as Fed Chair, and I’ll announce it shortly,” Trump told reporters.
He declined to confirm whether his nominee to succeed Jerome Powell will be Kevin Hassett, the current director of Trump’s National Economic Council. According to wagers on the Kalshi prediction market, Hassett now holds a 72% probability of receiving the nomination, up sharply from below 40% on Tuesday. Fed Governor Christopher Waller stands at 11%, while former Fed Governor Kevin Warsh is at 12%.
Earlier on Sunday, Hassett said on CBS’ Face the Nation that the market’s reaction to reports Trump was closing in on a decision was encouraging. Hassett, a vocal defender of Trump’s economic policies, including tariffs and interest-rate positions, added that he would be willing to serve as Fed chair if nominated.
Trump has repeatedly urged Powell and the central bank to cut interest rates. He has threatened to remove Powell, whose term ends in mid-May, and is attempting to oust Fed Governor Lisa Cook, who has challenged his authority and faces allegations of mortgage fraud
