Trump Allies See Kevin Hassett as Leading Candidate for Fed Chair

Nov 26, 2025, 2:23 a.m. ET

White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett is viewed by advisers and allies of President Donald Trump as the frontrunner to become the next Federal Reserve chair, according to sources familiar with the matter, as the search for a new central bank leader enters its final weeks.

With Hassett, Trump would have a close ally at the independent central bank—someone he knows well and trusts, the sources said on condition of anonymity. Hassett is seen as likely to align the Fed more closely with Trump’s long-standing preference for interest-rate cuts, the sources added.
