BHP Group has withdrawn from a renewed takeover approach for Anglo American Plc, bringing an abrupt end to the world’s largest miner’s brief and unexpected bid to disrupt Anglo’s planned merger with Canada’s Teck Resources Ltd.

BHP confirmed on Monday that it had engaged in preliminary talks with Anglo, but said it is “no longer considering a combination of the two companies” and will instead focus on advancing its existing portfolio.
