New Study Finds AI Tools Outperform Traditional Scales in Diagnosing Mental Disorders

Artificial intelligence tools used in psychological assessment interviews can diagnose mental health disorders more accurately than the standardized questionnaires widely used in clinical settings, according to an international study published this week.

Researchers found that AI-assisted interviews achieved higher diagnostic precision by dynamically adjusting questions based on a patient’s responses, rather than relying on fixed-form scales that may overlook nuanced symptoms. The findings point to a new technological pathway for digitising psychiatric evaluation and improving early detection.

The study, released in the UK-based journal Scientific Reports, assessed outcomes across diverse patient groups and clinical environments. It concluded that AI-driven assessments were better at capturing complex emotional patterns and identifying conditions that are often misdiagnosed using traditional tools.
