The U.S. government moved ahead with its plan to dismantle the Department of Education, announcing on Monday that several of the agency’s core functions will be reassigned to other federal departments.
According to a statement issued by the Education Department, the agency has signed agreements with the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services (HHS), the Interior Department and the State Department to transfer six major functions currently under its oversight.
Under the agreements, the Labor Department will take over K–12 education programs as well as most federal higher-education funding initiatives. HHS will assume responsibility for programs that support students balancing academics and childcare, along with the accreditation of foreign medical schools. The Interior Department will take charge of the Bureau of Indian Education, while the State Department will oversee an expanded portfolio of international education functions.
