China’s three largest state-owned airlines said they will allow passengers traveling to Japan to reschedule or receive refunds free of charge after Beijing advised its citizens to avoid traveling there due to rising security risks and provocative remarks from Japanese leaders regarding Taiwan.
China Eastern Airlines said tickets with at least one unused segment for flights to Japan between Nov. 15 and Dec. 31 can be rescheduled once or refunded without extra fees. China Southern Airlines and Air China announced similar policies.
On Nov. 14, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, along with its embassies and consulates in Japan, issued a notice urging Chinese citizens to avoid traveling to Japan in the near term. Those already in Japan were advised to stay alert, enhance safety awareness, and strengthen self-protection.
