Tesla CEO Elon Musk said Thursday the company may need to build “a gigantic chip fab” to produce its own artificial intelligence chips, adding that the EV maker could potentially collaborate with Intel.
Speaking at Tesla’s annual meeting, Musk outlined plans for the company’s fifth-generation AI chip, which is being designed to advance its autonomous driving ambitions.
“You know, maybe we’ll do something with Intel,” Musk told an enthusiastic crowd of shareholders. “We haven’t signed any deal, but it’s probably worth having discussions with Intel.”
Intel, which operates its own chip fabrication plants, has struggled to keep up with Nvidia in the booming AI chip market. The U.S. government recently acquired a 10% stake in the chipmaker as it seeks to bolster domestic semiconductor production.
Following Musk’s remarks, Intel shares rose 4% in after-hours trading.
