China-Canada Direct Flights Still Lag at 36% of Pre-Pandemic Levels

Nov 05, 2025, 12:47 a.m. ET

The number of international direct flights between China and Canada has recovered to only 36 percent of pre-Covid-19 levels.

In 2019, over 70 direct flights operated weekly between the two countries, with Chinese airlines accounting for roughly two-thirds. Since Canada lifted restrictions on direct flights in October last year, the number has remained stuck at 24 per week.

New regulations set an equal maximum number of direct flights for Chinese and Canadian carriers. However, Chinese airlines currently operate a larger share, indicating that Canadian carriers have not yet fully utilized their allotted quota.
