Chinese electric vehicle maker Li Auto will recall 11,411 Li Mega units — nearly half of all vehicles delivered — due to insufficient coolant corrosion protection, less than two weeks after one of its multi-purpose electric vehicles burst into flames in Shanghai.
The recall, effective Nov. 7, covers Li Mega vehicles manufactured between Feb. 18 and Dec. 27, 2024, according to a notice posted by the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) on Oct. 31.
The issue came to light after a Li Mega caught fire under its chassis while moving slowly through an intersection in Shanghai on Oct. 23, with the vehicle fully engulfed within 10 seconds, according to eyewitness reports.
SAMR said the aluminum cooling plates of the vehicle’s power battery pack and front motor controller may corrode and leak due to inadequate coolant protection, potentially causing a short circuit and fire risk.
Li Auto said it will upgrade the coolant and inspect affected components free of charge to eliminate safety hazards.
