Some automakers in Brazil could be forced to halt production within two to three weeks if the global semiconductor supply disruption persists, a senior government official warned on Tuesday. The shortage stems from a stand-off between China and the Netherlands involving chipmaker Nexperia.
Uallace Moreira, a secretary at Brazil’s Development, Industry, Trade and Services Ministry, said the government is in contact with Chinese authorities to help resolve the issue. He did not specify which manufacturers operating in Latin America’s largest auto market might be affected first.
“If there is no solution in this short period of time, in two or three weeks there may be a shutdown for some automakers,” Moreira told reporters after meeting with the president of automakers association Anfavea. Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, who also oversees the ministry, also joined the discussions.
