China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations signed an expanded version of their free trade agreement, signaling closer economic ties as both sides face growing protectionist pressures from the United States.

Chinese Premier Li Qiang, speaking at the ASEAN-China summit after the signing, highlighted the importance of regional solidarity. “Unity is strength,” Li said, adding that closer cooperation could help navigate global economic uncertainties.

The agreement, known as the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area 3.0, was signed on the final day of the annual ASEAN summit and related meetings. The ceremony was attended by Li Qiang and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is serving as ASEAN chair this year.

The upgraded pact aims to deepen trade and investment links, reduce tariffs, and broaden market access between China and the ten-member ASEAN bloc, reinforcing economic integration in the region.
