China now accounts for over 60% of the world’s power batteries and around 70% of battery materials, according to official data, giving the country’s rapidly growing new energy vehicle (NEV) industry a significant competitive advantage.
Yao Zhenzhi, deputy director of the Equipment Industry Development Center at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said at a press conference that China’s power battery production surged more than tenfold from 83.4 GWh in 2020 to over 1,000 GWh last year.
The industry maintained strong growth in the first nine months of 2025, with cumulative installed capacity rising 43% year-on-year to 493.9 GWh. Power battery exports also increased 33% to roughly 130 GWh.
Chinese companies are further embedding themselves into the global supply chain through investments in overseas factories and R&D centers across Europe, Southeast Asia, and Africa.
