U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that all trade negotiations with Canada have been terminated, citing a controversial advertisement in which former President Ronald Reagan appeared to speak against tariffs.
Earlier this year, Trump imposed tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and automobiles, prompting retaliatory measures from Ottawa. The two countries had been in discussions for weeks over a potential agreement covering the steel and aluminum sectors.
“Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The dispute stems from an anti-tariff ad launched by Ontario, which featured Reagan criticizing tariffs for causing job losses and trade wars. Ontario Premier Doug Ford acknowledged the ad had caught Trump’s attention, saying, “I heard that the president heard our ad. I’m sure he wasn’t too happy.”
