U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday he expects to reach a “good” trade deal with Chinese President Xi Jinping at a regional summit next week, though he cautioned that the long-awaited talks might still be called off.
Trump has repeatedly shifted his stance on meeting Xi at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea since first announcing the potential encounter.
“So now we’re going to have a fair deal, and I think we’re going to have a very successful meeting. Certainly, there are a lot of people waiting for it,” Trump said during a luncheon with Republican senators at the White House.
