Samsung and Google Unveil Android XR to Challenge Meta in Smart Glasses Market

Oct 21, 2025, 10:58 p.m. ET

Samsung Electronics and Google are joining forces to take on Meta Platforms (META) in the fast-growing smart glasses market with the launch of their new Android XR operating system.

Co-developed with Qualcomm, Android XR is built to power a new generation of extended reality (XR) devices — from mixed-reality headsets to what the companies describe as “AI glasses,” wearable devices embedded with Google’s Gemini AI assistant.

The collaboration underscores the tech giants’ push to establish an open, Android-based ecosystem for immersive and AI-driven wearables, positioning it as a direct competitor to Meta’s Quest platform and Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses.

Samsung is expected to integrate Android XR into its upcoming XR headset, while Google’s Gemini AI will provide on-device intelligence, voice interaction, and contextual awareness. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset will serve as the platform’s processing backbone, offering high-performance graphics and efficient power consumption.

By pooling their hardware, software, and AI strengths, Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm aim to accelerate the development of next-generation XR experiences — combining artificial intelligence, spatial computing, and seamless connectivity.
