Anthropic PBC is in discussions with Alphabet Inc.’s Google over a potential deal that would grant the artificial intelligence startup additional computing power valued in the high tens of billions of dollars, according to people familiar with the matter.

The plan, which has yet to be finalized, would see Google provide cloud computing services to Anthropic, the people said, requesting anonymity as the talks are private. Under the proposed agreement, Anthropic would gain access to Google’s tensor processing units, or TPUs — chips custom-designed to accelerate machine learning workloads, one of the people noted.

Google is already an investor in Anthropic and serves as one of its existing cloud providers. If completed, the new arrangement would deepen their partnership at a time when competition in the generative AI sector continues to intensify among major tech players.
