Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and his Cabinet stepped down en masse on Monday morning, marking the end of his administration as the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) prepares for a leadership reshuffle.
The resignations were submitted during a Cabinet meeting held earlier in the day in Tokyo. The move clears the way for the LDP to appoint a new leader, who is expected to be formally named prime minister later this week.
Ishiba, who took office following his predecessor’s resignation, has faced mounting political pressure and waning support within the party.
