China’s Foreign Ministry has responded to recent comments from U.S. President Donald Trump, who named rare earths, fentanyl, and soybeans as Washington’s top three concerns in the ongoing economic negotiations with Beijing.
At a regular press briefing on Monday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun reaffirmed China’s consistent stance on trade issues between the two countries. Responding to a question from a Bloomberg reporter, Guo emphasized that unilateral measures such as tariff and trade wars serve no one’s interest.
“China’s position on handling China-U.S. economic and trade issues is consistent and clear,” Guo said. “Tariff wars and trade wars are not in the interest of either side. All issues should be resolved through dialogue and consultation on the basis of equality, mutual respect, and mutual benefit.”
The comments come after Trump stated that the U.S. would prioritize rare earth supply chains, the flow of illicit fentanyl, and agricultural trade—particularly soybeans—in its agenda for upcoming negotiations. Rare earth minerals are vital for manufacturing electronics and defense technologies, and China is the world’s dominant supplier.
The upcoming talks are seen as an opportunity to ease friction between the world’s two largest economies amid rising geopolitical uncertainty. While both sides have acknowledged differences, officials have also signaled a willingness to pursue constructive dialogue.
