China's Lithium Battery Manufacturing Industry Sees a 30% Surge in Added Value in First Nine Months

China’s lithium-ion battery manufacturing industry continued its rapid expansion in the first three quarters of the year, with added value from major enterprises increasing by 29.8% year-on-year, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Monday.

The growth comes amid the sustained impact of China’s policies to boost domestic demand, particularly those under the “Two New” and “Two Heavy” initiatives, which aim to stimulate innovation-driven and green sectors while investing in key infrastructure and manufacturing. These policies, the NBS noted, have increasingly filtered through to the production side of the economy, advancing equipment manufacturing, consumer goods production, and high-tech sectors.

“The continued implementation of these policies has accelerated the expansion of intelligent manufacturing, green production, and digital technologies,” said an NBS spokesperson. “This momentum is driving industrial upgrading and speeding up the transition between old and new growth engines.”

Beyond lithium-ion batteries, several other sectors also posted strong growth. The shipbuilding and related equipment manufacturing industry saw a 22.9% year-on-year increase in added value, while electric motor manufacturing grew by 17.1%.

Production of “update-oriented” equipment also surged, with output of CNC forging and pressing machines rising by 11.7%, and specialized packaging equipment growing by 26.0%. Among consumer product categories, “replacement-oriented” goods such as new energy vehicles (NEVs), electric bicycles, and tablet computers experienced notable production increases of 29.7%, 27.1%, and 9.5% respectively.

Industry analysts say the lithium battery boom reflects strong downstream demand, particularly in the fast-growing electric vehicle and energy storage markets. It also highlights China’s leading role in the global shift toward low-carbon and smart energy solutions.

As China continues to prioritize high-quality development, the National Bureau of Statistics emphasized that it will closely monitor emerging industrial trends to support sound policymaking and sustainable growth across key sectors.
