The Trump administration is pressing Japan to halt energy imports from Russia, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Japanese Finance Minister Katsunobu Kato during a meeting on Wednesday, according to a post on X.

The U.S. is intensifying efforts to cut Moscow’s energy revenue, a primary source of funding for the war in Ukraine. However, Japan has repeatedly stated that it does not plan to stop purchasing Russian liquefied natural gas, citing energy security concerns. Last year, Russia accounted for roughly 8% of Japan’s LNG imports.
