Trump Announces Discount Drug Deal with AstraZeneca in Exchange for Tariff Relief

Oct 11, 2025, 2:55 a.m. ET

U.S. President Donald Trump announced a new agreement with Britain-based pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca on Friday, under which the drugmaker will offer certain medications at discounted prices to the government’s Medicaid program in return for tariff relief.

The arrangement mirrors a similar deal reached last week with Pfizer.

These agreements form part of a broader White House strategy aimed at reducing the cost of prescription drugs in the United States. In July, Trump sent letters to 17 major pharmaceutical companies urging them to cut prices. AstraZeneca and Pfizer are the first to reach formal agreements under the initiative.

As part of the deal, AstraZeneca will also make select medications available at up to 80% off their list prices through the upcoming TrumpRx website, set to launch next year, according to CEO Pascal Soriot, who spoke during an Oval Office event.
