BYD Extends Lead Over Tesla in Europe as EV Sales Surge

Sep 25, 2025, 4:05 a.m. ET

AsianFin -- Chinese electric-vehicle maker BYD Co. sold nearly three times as many new cars in the European Union last month compared with August 2024, overtaking Tesla Inc. for the second straight month, according to data released Thursday by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA).

The figures highlight BYD’s growing foothold in Europe’s EV market at a time when Chinese automakers are stepping up exports despite looming EU tariffs.

Meanwhile, Stellantis NV returned to sales growth in the region for the first time in more than a year. Overall European car sales climbed as demand for plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and battery-electric vehicles (BEV) picked up, underscoring how electrified models are driving the market’s recovery.
