AsianFin -- U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday blasted the United Nations for failing to support American-led peace initiatives, while also assuring Secretary-General Antonio Guterres that Washington “100%” backs the organization.

In a wide-ranging speech to the UN General Assembly, Trump portrayed the body as outdated and ineffective, lamenting its inaction on global conflicts. He claimed credit for working to end “seven wars” without UN assistance and questioned its overall purpose.

“All they seem to do is write a really strongly worded letter and then never follow that letter up. It’s empty words, and empty words don’t solve war. The only thing that solves war and wars is action,” Trump said.

His remarks also included colorful anecdotes, including complaints about a faulty escalator and a malfunctioning teleprompter at UN headquarters. “These are the two things I got from the United Nations: a bad escalator and a bad teleprompter,” he quipped, The New York Times reported.
