AsianFin -- Top members of the House China committee are calling on Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo to investigate Chinese electronics and phone accessory maker Anker Innovations Technology Co. for alleged unfair pricing and potential illegal evasion of U.S. tariffs.
In a letter sent Friday to the Commerce Department, Republican Chairman John Moolenaar and Democratic Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi accused Anker of deploying “unlawful methods” to avoid paying U.S. tariffs. According to the lawmakers, the company misclassified product codes and illegally routed products through Southeast Asian countries to dodge trade levies, giving it an “unfair advantage” in the U.S. market.
The letter also highlighted that Anker received at least $12 million in subsidies from the Chinese government in 2023, which the committee said further enabled the company to gain market access that U.S. competitors cannot match.
Following the news, Anker’s shares fell 8% on Monday, marking their biggest drop since April.
