Samsung Shares Surge to Year-High on Report of Nvidia Chip Approval

Sep 21, 2025, 11:22 p.m. ET

AsianFin -- Shares of Samsung Electronics Co. soared more than 5% Monday, reaching their highest level since August 2024, following reports that the company secured approval from Nvidia Corp. for its advanced memory chips — a major milestone for the South Korean tech giant.

Local media, including the Korea Economic Daily, reported that Samsung’s 12-layer HBM3E memory recently passed Nvidia’s qualification tests, clearing the components for use in AI accelerators critical to training models from ChatGPT to DeepSeek. The approval positions Samsung to compete more directly with SK Hynix Inc. in the high-end memory market.

In 2025, Samsung has intensified efforts to catch up with SK Hynix and Micron Technology Inc. in supplying high-bandwidth memory, which is engineered to operate alongside Nvidia chips powering AI services used by companies such as Meta Platforms Inc. and OpenAI. Company officials declined to comment on the reports.
