China Launches Construction of World’s Largest Ultra-High Voltage DC Power Line

Sep 18, 2025, 3:06 a.m. ET

AsianFin -- China has begun building a massive ultra-high voltage direct current (UHVDC) power line that will span from the Xizang Autonomous Region in the country’s far west to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area on the east coast.

With a total investment of 53.2 billion yuan (USD7.5 billion), the project will become the world’s largest clean electricity direct current transmission line once completed.

The 2,681-kilometer power line will traverse major regions including Xizang, Yunnan, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and Guangdong province. It is designed to carry up to 10 million kilowatts of power and is expected to enter service in 2029, according to announcements from grid operators State Grid Corporation of China and China Southern Power Grid.

Upon completion, the transmission line will deliver over 43 billion kilowatt-hours of clean electricity annually to the Greater Bay Area—roughly half the yearly output of the Three Gorges Dam. The project is projected to save 12 million tons of standard coal consumption each year and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 33 million tons, underscoring China’s commitment to expanding its clean energy infrastructure.
