AsianFin -- Tesla is working on redesigning its door handles to make them safer and less likely to trap occupants, the company’s chief designer Franz von Holzhausen told Bloomberg News on Wednesday.
The move follows the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) decision a day earlier to open an investigation into Tesla’s door handle design, and a Bloomberg report last week that documented multiple incidents of passengers being stuck in vehicles after crashes.
Von Holzhausen did not specify when Tesla decided to rethink its door handle mechanism. China has already urged automakers to reconsider fully concealed door handles over safety concerns, though regulators there have yet to impose new rules.
Two key issues have been identified: Tesla’s electronically controlled locks may fail if the vehicle loses power, and its manual release mechanisms are often difficult to locate and operate in emergencies.
