AsianFin -- U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday urged NATO allies to impose a full ban on Russian oil, warning that continued imports undermine efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
In a letter posted on Truth Social on Sept. 13, Trump said he was prepared to impose major sanctions on Moscow if all NATO members agreed to stop buying Russian crude. He criticized some European nations for maintaining imports, saying the purchases “weaken your power to negotiate.”
Trump also accused China of indirectly supporting Russia through oil purchases. He proposed tariffs of 50% to 100% on Chinese goods if NATO countries halt imports, adding the measures should remain until the war ends.
The proposal comes as the U.S. and G7 partners work on strategies to further isolate Russia and Iran. Analysts said the plan could strain NATO unity, increase tensions with China, and disrupt global energy markets.
