Databricks AI Chief Naveen Rao to Exit, Launch New Computing Startup

Sep 11, 2025, 10:19 p.m. ET

AsianFin -- Naveen Rao, head of artificial intelligence at $100 billion data analytics startup Databricks Inc., is set to leave his role to launch a new venture focused on building a novel type of computer, according to a person familiar with the matter.

A spokesperson for Databricks confirmed Rao’s departure, noting that he will shift into an advisory role at the company. The spokesperson added that Databricks plans to invest in Rao’s new startup, though the size of the investment was not disclosed.

Rao, who joined Databricks in 2020 after the company acquired his previous startup Nervana Systems, has been central to shaping Databricks’ AI strategy amid intensifying competition in generative AI. His decision to pursue a new computing architecture suggests a growing focus among industry veterans on building hardware and systems better suited for large-scale AI workloads.

The move comes as Databricks ramps up its own investments in AI, including partnerships and acquisitions to strengthen its position against rivals like Snowflake and OpenAI-backed platforms. Rao’s new venture is expected to operate independently, though Databricks’ backing highlights the company’s willingness to support bold bets in AI infrastructure.
