AsianFin -- AI startup Perplexity has secured investor commitments for $200 million in fresh funding at a valuation of $20 billion, according to a report by The Information on Wednesday citing a person familiar with the matter.
The company, led by co-founder and CEO Aravind Srinivas, has drawn attention with its ambitious growth strategy. In August, Perplexity made headlines after submitting an unsolicited $34.5 billion all-cash offer to acquire Alphabet’s Chrome browser—nearly double its own market valuation. Though the bid was far-fetched, it underscored the startup’s aggressive push to gain scale and relevance in a fast-evolving AI ecosystem.
Backed by chipmaker Nvidia, Perplexity has built its own AI browser called Comet, designed to perform tasks on users’ behalf, integrating generative AI to streamline browsing and productivity. Acquiring Chrome would have given the startup direct access to the browser’s more than three billion global users, a scale that could have put it in closer competition with industry heavyweights like OpenAI.
