U.S. to Cut Tariffs on Japanese Cars, Auto Parts by September 16

AsianFin -- U.S. tariffs on Japanese goods, including cars and auto parts, will be lowered by September 16, Japan’s chief tariff negotiator Ryosei Akazawa said Tuesday in a post on X.

Akazawa cited a U.S. Federal Register notice dated September 9 that formalized President Donald Trump’s executive order implementing the U.S.-Japan trade agreement. The revised tariff rates will take effect within seven days of the document’s publication, he said.

The move clears lingering uncertainty over when Washington would reduce levies on Japanese cars to 15% from 27.5%, following the trade deal reached in July. Trump signed the executive order last week, paving the way for its enactment.

The tariff cut marks a significant win for Japanese automakers, who had faced a competitive disadvantage compared with rivals whose vehicles were subject to lower U.S. duties.
