U.S. Plans New Restrictions on Chinese Drones, Heavy Vehicles Over Security Concerns

Sep 07, 2025, 10:08 p.m. ET

AsianFin — The Trump administration is preparing to roll out rules that would restrict or potentially block imports of Chinese-made drones and medium- to heavy-duty vehicles, citing national security risks, Reuters reported Friday.

The move comes after earlier measures targeting Chinese cars and trucks. According to the U.S. Commerce Department, the forthcoming rules — expected as soon as this month — will focus on information and communications technology used in drones and in vehicles weighing more than 10,000 pounds from China and other “foreign adversaries.”

Details of the rules were not disclosed.

In Beijing, a Chinese industry expert dismissed the plan as another trade barrier “under the guise of national security,” accusing Washington of smearing Chinese products without evidence. The expert warned that such restrictions would disrupt global supply chains and “ultimately backfire on U.S. domestic industries.”
