Rivian Cuts 150 Jobs as EV Maker Prepares for Launch of Cheaper R2 SUV

Sep 04, 2025, 10:35 p.m. ET

AsianFin -- Rivian is trimming its workforce once again, cutting about 150 employees as the electric-vehicle startup sharpens its focus on next year’s launch of the R2, a lower-cost sport utility vehicle seen as critical to its future growth.

The company confirmed the layoffs to TechCrunch on Thursday, saying the reductions were largely concentrated in its commercial team, which handles sales and service operations. Impacted employees will be eligible for rehire and encouraged to apply for other open positions. The Wall Street Journal was first to report the move.

The cuts represent Rivian’s second small round of layoffs in just a few months. In late June, the company eliminated about 1% of its workforce, targeting roles in its manufacturing unit.
