OpenAI to Develop First AI Chip with Broadcom in 2026, FT Reports

Sep 04, 2025, 10:29 p.m. ET

AsianFin -- OpenAI will produce its first artificial intelligence chip next year in partnership with U.S. semiconductor giant Broadcom, the Financial Times reported Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter.

The chip is intended for OpenAI’s internal use rather than external sales, according to the report. Both OpenAI and Broadcom declined to comment when contacted by Reuters outside regular business hours, and Reuters could not independently verify the information.

The move underscores OpenAI’s push to reduce its reliance on Nvidia, which dominates the AI chip market. Reuters reported in February that the ChatGPT developer had begun work on its first in-house silicon project to diversify supply.

Broadcom CEO Hock Tan said earlier Thursday the company had secured more than $10 billion in AI infrastructure orders from a new customer, though he did not name the firm.

OpenAI’s effort mirrors strategies by Google, Amazon, and Meta, which have built custom chips to power their expanding AI workloads as demand for computing capacity continues to surge.
