AsianFin -- Tesla has begun delivering its new six-seat Model Y L electric vehicles (EV) in China, the company confirmed in a statement to the Global Times on Thursday. The launch is widely seen as a strategic move to fend off growing competition from domestic automakers in the world’s largest auto market.
Produced at Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory, the Model Y L is an extended version of the standard Model Y, with a 179-millimeter increase in length and a 150-millimeter longer wheelbase, offering a more spacious cabin and a six-seat layout.
In addition, Tesla introduced a long-range, rear-wheel-drive Model 3 boasting a range of 830 kilometers and acceleration from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 5.2 seconds.
Citing China Passenger Car Association data, Tesla said its Shanghai plant delivered 83,192 vehicles in August, marking the company’s strongest monthly sales in China this year.
Industry analysts noted that while Tesla still enjoys first-mover and technological advantages in China’s EV market, these edges are narrowing. The launch of specialized models like the Model Y L and long-range Model 3 underscores Tesla’s efforts to maintain competitiveness amid intensifying local rivalry.
